Hurricane Preparedness
Hurricane season is here, and as a valued
Waste Management customer, we want you to be aware of tips
that may make the waste collection process easier in the event
of a severe weather event.
Pre-Storm Collection Tips for
Residential Customers
- Waste Management and its affiliates will stop collection
in areas designated for mandatory evacuation at the moment
the evacuation order is issued by local authorities to ensure
the safety of our employees and to minimize congestion on
evacuation routes. Do not place garbage and/or recycling by
the curbside after a mandatory evacuation has been issued.
- Secure all garbage cans and recycling containers in a safe
location to prevent them from leaving your premises.
- Tie down any loose trash such as tree limbs, boxes, large
containers, etc. in an effort to prevent debris from becoming
a hazard to other residents, homes and automobiles during
high winds.
- Make an effort to reduce or dispose of perishable items
and waste materials during the days before an expected major
weather event. Leaving perishable items outside after collection
has stopped poses a heath hazard post-storm. Food should be
left in refrigerators/freezers or secured in sealed containers
until collection resumes.
Post-Collection Tips for Residential
Customers
- Waste Management and its affiliates will resume garbage
and/or recycling collection when local authorities deem it
safe to return to an area and only on streets that are passable
and safe for waste collection.
- In most areas, Waste Management and its affiliates will
collect household garbage and/or recycling; while other contractors
collect storm debris. To be sure for your area, contact your
municipality or look for communications from the city.
- Do not mix household garbage or recycling with storm debris
when placing curbside. Bag your garbage and recyclables; leave
your storm debris in a neat, separate pile, or as directed
by your local government.
- Check our Hurricane
Updates website for periodic updates on collection in
your area.
