El Sobrante LandfillAbout Waste Management![]() Waste Management, Inc. is its industry's leading provider of comprehensive waste management services. Headquartered in Houston, Texas, we protect the quality of life in many communities, providing waste solutions to approximately 25 million residential and two million commercial customers in North America.
The El Sobrante Landfill is a state-of-the-art class three landfill, opened in 1986 as a partnership between Riverside County and Waste Management. In August 2001, the facility received a major expansion and now has 495 acres of permitted for disposal activities with more than 120 million cubic yards of remaining capacity. The El Sobrante Landfill can accept up to 10,000 tons per day of waste from the California Counties of Riverside, Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego and San Bernardino.
Waste that is generated outside of Riverside County and disposed of at the El Sobrante Landfill provides a significant source of funding to the citizens of Riverside County for use in many local projects, including endangered species habitat conservation and management.
As part of El Sobrante Landfill expansion, Waste Management agreed to place more than 1,300 acres of adjacent property into permanent wildlife conservation and to actively manage those acres for 31 protected species for the next 80 years. Waste Management has also agreed to restore the landfill as it is completed to Riversidian Sage Scrub habitat and monitor the return of protected species.
In 2002 the El Sobrante Landfill will bring on-line three methane powered electrical generators and begin to feed electricity back into the power grid for consumption by off-site business and residents. Eventually, as the landfill grows and produces more methane, additional methane recovery systems will be added to produce more electricity or to produce clean burning liquid and compressed natural gas for use by our refuse collection vehicles.
The El Sobrante Lanfill is an excellent example of how a public/private partnership between Waste Management and local government can solve complex regional problems and provide local economic opportunities. Continuing to make a differenceWaste Management is strongly committed to the safe and responsible management of waste and the highest quality of service. We are responsive to the concerns of our citizens and work diligently to ensure regulatory compliance and protection of the public's health and natural resources. |
