On January 9, 2008, WM announced a new clothing and shoes reycling program in Sonora, Calif. that is free to the public. To participate, residents should place dry clothing and shoes into bags and then drop them in designated "Green Clothes Boxes" at Waste Management's Transfer Station at 13909 Industrial Drive, or at its Recycling Center at 14595 Camage Ave.

Waste Management is working with a clothing recycling company to offer this free service and help the distribution of clothing to people in need, while keeping reusable clothing out of the waste stream.

"This is another way we at Waste Management enjoy working with our customers to increase the amount of material that is reused and recycled, while reducing the amount of material that goes to disposal," said Dan Peterson, district manager of Waste Management, Sonora.

This program is important because the amount of clothing offered for donation in Tuolumne County exceeds the capacity available to local charities and similar institutions to accept these items for redistribution, Peterson added.
