Waste Management's operations span all of North America, yet we maintain a strong local commitment to every community we serve. The company embraces the opportunity to be a good corporate citizen through a vigorous and growing community relations program including providing financial support to local and company wide community organizations that are working hard to address community concerns.

Local Contributions


Bay Checkerspot Butterfly (Euphydryas editha bayensis)
Mitigation activites began in 1985. Bay Checkerspot Butterflies are only know to exist in four colonies in the San Francisco Bay Area. Three populations are in San Mateo and the fourth at Kirby Canyon. Kirby Canyon manages a 250-acre mitigation area for the butterly with controlled grazing to improve the habitat. The butterfly has only one generation per year. THe flight period is approximatley four to five weeks each spring. Federally listed threatened 1987.
