Leading by Example
At the national level, Waste Management is actively
involved with a number of organizations whose work merits our support
through leadership, partnership or membership.
The City Livability Awards
Sponsored by The U.S. Conference of Mayors and Waste Management,
the City Livability Awards honor mayors and their city governments
for developing programs to enhance the quality of life in Americas
cities. The City Livability Awards are given annually to 10 mayors
and their cities in recognition of outstanding programs. In 2005,
top awards went to Seattle, Washington, for its Climate Protection
Initiative and to Trenton, New Jersey, for its Mayors Youth
Advocacy Cabinet. The winning programs range in focus and scope,
but all are aimed at making urban areas safer, cleaner and more
livable. Waste Management has sponsored the awards since 1989.
America Recycles Day
Waste Management is a premier sponsor of America Recycles
Day, a non-profit organization that encourages Americans to recycle
and to buy recycled products. An annual recycling event encourages
businesses and consumers across America to start or increase their
recycling efforts and to buy recycled-content products.
Keep America Beautiful
Keep America
Beautiful is the nations leading community improvement
organization, and its Great American Cleanup, sponsored in part
by Waste Management, is the nations largest community improvement
program. More than 2.4 million volunteers nationwide participated
in the 2005 Great American Cleanup, collecting over 208 million
pounds of litter and debris. In addition to serving as a national
sponsor of the event, Waste Management facilities are very active
in local chapters throughout the United States.
