Keeping our Communities Clean
KAB is the nations leading community
improvement organization, and its Great American Cleanup, sponsored
in part by Waste Management, is the nations largest community
improvement program. More than 2.4 million volunteers nationwide
participated in the 2005 Great American Cleanup, collecting over
208 million pounds of litter and debris. In addition to serving
as a national sponsor of the event, Waste Management facilities
are very active in local chapters throughout the United States.
In 2005, KAB's Great American Cleanup volunteers
cleaned up 180,150 total miles and 58,000 total acres coast to coast:
- 2,300 miles of rivers, lakes and shoreline
- 176,000 miles of roads, streets and highways
- 1,850 miles alongside railroad tracks
- 51,000 acres of parks and public lands
- 7,000 acres of wetlands

Since 1986, Keep America Beautiful has presented its annual Vision
for America Award to corporations that have significantly enhanced
civic, environmental and
social stewardship throughout the United States. In 2004, Waste
Management was honored to receive this prestigious award in recognition
of our innovations in
waste treatment, recycling and conservation. For more than 20 years,
Waste Management has worked with Keep America Beautiful to further
its community
programs and educational initiatives at both the national and local
levels.
