Area Residents Make Good Use
of Shared Use Landfill
Waste Management has gained recognition for the Penn Warner Club located
outside of Philadelphia. Used as one of the locations in our Think
Green® television campaign,
the landfill buffer zone provides area residents with opportunities
for camping, fishing and other outdoor recreational opportunities
such as boating on man-made Manor and Van Sciver Lakes.
In 2001, the Wildlife Habitat Council certified
the 6,000-acre landfill buffer zone as an ideal setting for birds
and waterfowl. The area is now home to blue heron, snowy egrets
and Osprey nesting sites, as well as the endangered Redbelly Turtle.
The wildlife team has instituted a water management strategy for
the area's 2,000-acre freshwater lakes that includes aquatic ecosystem
and natural diversity programs.
Waste Management employees maintain natural buffers
along lakeshores and have planted corn, sunflowers and wildflowers
for wildlife feeding.
