On The Right Track for Fun and
the Future
Just because a landfill is closed doesn't mean it can't continue to
be of service to the community. Case in point: Denver, Colorado.
Working with the park and recreation district in
Denver, Waste Management transformed an inactive landfill into a
challenging BMX racetrack. This five-acre course is altered periodically
to offer new challenges to BMX racing enthusiasts. The track has
played host to national meets, drawing racers from across the western
United States.
The remainder of the site was recently developed
into an athletic field complex that serves the 250,000 area residents
by providing a number of playing fields for youth sports. As another
Think Green® initiative, the new fields use artificial grass
made from recycled rubber materials.
