Outer Loop Receives Award for Landfill Excellence
WM’s Outer Loop Recycling and Disposal Facility
in Louisville, Kentucky,
received the 2005 Landfill Excellence Gold Award from the Solid
Waste
Association of North America.
 The
facility includes a 455-acre wetlands area, a 40,000-ton-per-year
composting operation, a landfill gas-to-energy facility, a leachate
treatment plant and a petroleum-contaminated soil treatment area.
The landfill has reused more than 1 million shredded waste tires
in trials as leachate collection media. It delivers more than 1.1
trillion cubic feet of landfill gas to two nearby industrial customers,
where the gas is used as an alternative energy source to replace
conventional fuels.
