Turnkey Takes Landfills into the Next Generation
The Turnkey Recycling and Environmental Enterprise
facility in southeastern New Hampshire is a good example of how
Waste Management landfills combine functionality with advanced technology
and innovation.
The 1,200-acre site includes three landfills, a recycling facility,
a leachate treatment plant and two landfill gas-to-energy plants.
Some of the electricity generated by these plants provides power
to the onsite landfill gas flares, the leachate plant, and the recycling
facility. The remaining power is sold to utilities, providing enough
energy for about 8,000 homes and saving approximately 140,000 barrels
of heating oil per year.
| In addition to three landfills,
the landfill property includes a condominium complex, |
| a golf driving range,
a dog park, hiking trails, a model airplane complex, and an
education center for tours and training seminars. A former office
building on the site houses The Homeless Center for Strafford
County, which leases the space for $1 per year and provides
a shelter for women, children, and families from October through
April. Adjacent to the shelter are barns used for storage and
for housing livestock maintained on-site. |

As a result of its innovation and advanced technology,
Turnkey has been used as a model for other landfill operations throughout
the country.
