Our company has long been involved in environmental projects that
preserveand protect wildlife. Waste Managements landfillsprovide
more than 16,000 acres
of protected land for wetlands and wildlife habitats, which are
carefully managed in partnership with conservationists, universities
andenvironmental groups. Many of these landfill projects provide
safe harbor for threatened or endangered species of plants and animals.
These projects also serve to broaden understanding of wildlife values
through the incorporation of environmental education, volunteer
participation and community outreach programs.
Our wildlife habitats and wetlands restoration
projects have received numerous awards from environmental and government
agencies, including international recognition from the Wildlife
Habitat Council (WHC), an organization that brings the environmental
community and industry together in a cooperative effort to conserve
and restore natural ecosystems.
As of June 2006, 15 Waste Management landfill sites
have received certification from WHC for commendable wildlife habitat
management and environmental education programs.
