Waste Management Awards Companies for Sustainable Construction

Third Annual Sustainability Circle of Excellence Award recognizes outstanding performance in diversion and recycling

HOUSTON — Feb. 24, 2014 — Today, Waste Management announced the winners of the 2013 Sustainability Circle of Excellence Award, a recognition given to the top customers in the construction industry whose various projects achieved outstanding sustainability milestones. This year’s winning companies diverted the highest total tonnage for recycling in 2013, as measured by an online tracking application from Waste Management.

  • Balfour Beatty Construction, LLC – Mark Layman, Chairman & CEO
  • Big-D Construction – Jack Livingood, Chairman & CEO
  • Brasfield & Gorrie LLC – James Gorrie, President & CEO
  • Gilbane Building Company – Thomas F. Gilbane, Jr., Chairman & CEO
  • JE Dunn Construction – Gordon Lansford, President & CEO
  • M.A. Mortenson Company  – Thomas F. Gunkel, CEO
  • McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. – Michael D. Bolen, Chairman & CEO
  • Skanska USA, Inc.– Michael F. McNally, President & CEO
  • The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company – Richard Warhall, Vice President of Sustainability
  • The Walsh Group – Matthew Walsh, Chairman & CEO

In total, these winning companies put over 90 thousand tons of materials to reuse and achieved a 70 percent diversion rate. To know these precise calculations, as well as the impact their construction projects had on the environment, all used Waste Management’s Diversion and Recycling Tracking Tool (DART®), an online application that calculates the amount of waste – as well as the different types of waste – being diverted from the landfill.

Information is updated daily with accurate recycling totals. The tool can then convert those numbers into environmental statistics, such as the equivalent amount of greenhouse emissions a project avoided. The information DART® provides is used by some of the nation’s top builders to achieve LEED® certification.

“Congratulations to each company for their outstanding environmental performance,” said David Steiner, president & CEO for Waste Management. “We look forward to tracking these benchmarks in the future, since they represent a shared commitment to diversion, recycling and sound environmental practices.”

“We want to serve our customers better than anyone in the industry and the DART® tool is helping us do that,” said Jane Sumner, vice president overseeing construction services for Waste Management.
