Earth Day is April 22

Waste Management celebrates in public and through
social media

HOUSTON – On April 12, Waste Management kicked off the greenest holiday of the year
with its sponsorship of an Earth Day event at Discovery Green park, located two blocks from
the company’s headquarters in Houston.

At the event, employee volunteers educated participants on proper diversion through Waste
Management’s Recycle Often. Recycle Right.® campaign. With attendance numbering in the
thousands, guests were also invited to play games, take quizzes and earn WM-branded prizes.

“Every year, Earth Day is our time to shine,” said Erika Aaron, director of community relations
for Waste Management. “Our employees use the time to talk about what we do.”

In addition to the corporate event, more than 125 employees from southern Florida welcomed
nearly a 1,000 students and family members to their 5th Annual Earth Day Open House at
Monarch Hill Renewable Energy Park. Not only did the event feature landfill tours and hands-on
activities, it also raised money for 11 local elementary schools.

Also, in attendance were Miami Dolphins alumni players Mark Duper, Lorenzo Hampton and
Lousaka Polite, who posed for photographs with the students in front of a compressed natural gas
truck. Cheerleaders were also on-hand to encourage the students during the Recycle Often.
Recycle Right.® game.

“This is always a great day for the Florida Area and our employees as we come together to share
our environmental story and the pride we all have in doing our jobs well,” said Florida Area Vice
President Tim Hawkins. “We had 950 people take a bus tour of Monarch Hill Landfill, which is
incredible, and the students and their families had a great day and a big smile on their face when
they left our site along with a lot more knowledge of what we do here.”
