Safety Today

Game Show theme drives Summer Safety messages

Primos, Penn. Both the weather and the Greater Mid-Atlantic’s observance of 100 Days of Summer Safety are heating up as sites across the Area are putting their own twists on the competition to inspire safe operations.

At Delaware Valley – South Hauling, located near Philadelphia, the team is giving the safety initiative a “prime-time” twist with managers dressing up like game show hosts — equipped with wigs, polyester double-knit jackets, mock microphones and recognition points to build commitment among employees.

“The theme of our 100 Days of Summer Safety is ‘Game Shows’ and our show is — Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?,” said Steve Mitchell, manager for Waste Management. “Points are being awarded through our ‘29,000 Recognition Point Pyramid.’ When our people answer correctly, they can win special prizes.”

Mitchell works the yard as Jeopardy’s Alex Trebek, Roll-Off Manager Jerry Methven is Wink Martindale, Commercial Manager Johnny Martin is Let’s Make a Deal’s Monty Hall, Organics Manager David McComb is Wheel of Fortune’s Pat Sajak, Maintenance Manager Tom Florian is Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader’s Jeff Foxworthy, and Second Shift Supervisor Tim Zacher is The Match Game’s Gene Rayburn.

“This is hysterical,” Dave Yesavage, safety manager said. “I think it’s great. As crazy as it seems, we need to do whatever it takes to get the point across when it comes to risk reduction and safety.”

Yesavage went on to explain that U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulators make periodic visits to Area sites and conduct employee interviews to gauge the level of safety training and message retention. And while some of their younger co-workers have never heard of Wink Martindale or Monty Hall, the program has brought fresh attention to the company’s safety priorities.
