Driver Jay Fernandez killed following collision

Employee had right-of-way and belted

Greeley, Colo. – On July 16, Waste Management suffered its fourth employee fatality of the year when Eusebio (Jay) Fernandez, a 10-year employee, was killed following a collision while on his route. At just 45-years-old, Fernandez is survived by his wife, Raquel, and children, Michelle and Anthony.

The initial investigation indicates that a tractor trailer failed to obey a stop sign and struck the driver’s side of the truck, which had the right of way. While Fernandez was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the incident, the crash was significant.

“The loss of Jay is extremely painful — way beyond that for his family and his teammates,” wrote David Steiner, president and CEO, in an email to employees. “And it is a stark reminder that we always have to be acutely aware of the potential risks both at work and in our daily lives. It really matters. Please keep Jay’s family and his teammates in your thoughts and prayers.”
