Waste Management Phoenix Open wins gold
First PGA TOUR event to receive this green designation
PHOENIX – On August 6, the 2013 Waste Management Phoenix Open received Gold Certification for its
execution of this year’s tournament, in which the company achieved a 100 percent diversion rate. The honor
came from the Council for Responsible Sport, a nonprofit organization committed to supporting green athletics.
The Waste Management Phoenix Open is the first PGA TOUR event to receive this designation. Held last
February, and spanning one week, the company was able to divert all items to be either recycled, composted
or safely combusted at a waste-to-energy facility. Doing this conserved an impressive amount of resources,
including:
- 536 mature trees
- 526 cubic yards of landfill airspace
- 420,900 kilowatt-hours of electricity
- 300,300 gallons of water
“One hundred percent diversion, Underwriter Laboratories’ zero waste validation and Gold Certification from
the Council for Responsible Sport are all accomplishments Waste Management is extremely proud of,” said
David Aardsma, Waste Management chief sales and marketing officer.
