Frequently Asked Questions

What to expect during our Talent Acquisition process

Applying for a position

To apply for a position at Waste Management, simply search and select an opportunity of interest and complete the online application process. This will provide us with details of your current and prior work experience and education.

As part of the online application process, you will also be asked to upload your resume. This is an important step as it allows our recruiters to best evaluate your skills and qualification.

Once your application has been submitted and depending on your skills and experience, you may be contacted by a Waste Management recruiter to continue in the selection process.

Selection Process

At Waste Management many of our first interviews with applicants are by phone.  Should you require accommodation for the first or any subsequent interviews, please provide your request to the Waste Management recruiter, who will ensure your accommodation needs are considered. You may also notify us at careers@wm.com.

This first conversation with a Waste Management Recruiter will determine your suitability and availability for employment at Waste Management. Other details such as your prior work history will also be discussed. It will also give you an opportunity to ask questions.

We take pride on keeping our candidates informed of their status in our selection process. Please be sure to log into your candidate profile to review your status.  If not selected for a position you can expect to receive an email letting you know that the position has been filled or possibly cancelled.

Interview Process

The interview format can vary by hiring manager, location and type of position.  You may be asked to participate in one or more behavioral-based interviews with the hiring manager and a team member. This interview is normally conducted in person or virtually using a web camera.  Please don’t take the virtual interview as impersonal, it’s just another way we Think Green ®! Virtual interviews allow us to reduce carbon emissions associated with car or air travel.

Should you require accommodation for your interview with the hiring manager, please provide your request to the Waste Management Recruiter, who will ensure your accommodation needs are addressed. This interview is a great opportunity for you to better understand the position you’ve applied for, and hear first-hand what it’s like to work at Waste Management.

Employment Offer

If you’ve been identified as the successful candidate for the position, you’ll be given a conditional offer of employment.  Your offer may first be presented to you verbally over the phone to ensure you accept the terms and conditions of the offer. You will then be sent an email directing you to your offer letter and other pre-employment forms where you’ll provide the information required to complete background screening and drug testing (if applicable for position).

Pre-employment check

Offers of employment from Waste Management are conditional upon successful completion of background screening, drug test, and pre-employment physical (as required for the position).

After you have received your conditional offer of employment, our Center of Excellence team will reach out to provide support to you throughout the pre-employment phase. In some cases, additional information will be required in order to complete your background check.  Please respond to these requests in a timely way so we can ensure a quick onboarding.

Individuals receiving an offer of employment for a position requiring a CDL are required to pick up a pre-employment physical booklet and drug testing chain of custody from a Waste Management site.  The hiring manager or designee will reach out to you to coordinate. It is very important that the drug test be completed within 48 hours of receiving the offer.  Please note that the pre-employment drug screen is a separate test from the pre-employment physical.

On boarding

Waste Management provides all new employees with an orientation.  Attending orientation will ensure you have the information you need to be successful when you first start. This session will also help you meet other people new to Waste Management.

You’ll be provided more details on orientation once we have confirmed your successful completion of the pre-employment process.  Information such as your confirmed start date and where to report on your first day will be provided.
