Colorado

Waste Management (WM) of Colorado has proudly served Colorado communities for 57 years. Our 1,394 local team members, including 153 Veterans, working at 46 sites across the state, take great pride in serving our Colorado customers and creating cleaner, greener neighborhoods for their friends, families, and neighbors today and every day.

Committed to Communities

We want to help make our communities, cities and towns better places to work and live — today and for the future. In 2019, we supported more than 100 organizations and events throughout the state.

A Greener Today

Sustainability is an integral part of everyday life at WM. Being green today helps build a more sustainable tomorrow for all of us.

Sustainable Technologies

Innovations make our facilities and collections more efficient, our landfills safer, and ensure a cleaner, brighter future.

In 2019, we invested $1.4 million on new sorting equipment at our Denver Recycling Center to meet increasing quality requirements from producers of post-consumer products, and our Franklin Street Recycling Center, also in Denver, is testing robotics to sort recyclables better.

Our Denver Arapahoe Disposal Site (DADS) landfill in Aurora is piloting a remote-CAT program to improve safety and efficiency. While this technology is successful in the mining industry, this pilot program at DADS is the first of its kind in the waste industry. DADS is also piloting a solar-powered leachate pumping system, a more efficient and environmentally friendly plan for managing the liquids generated in the landfill and collected in the leachate sumps.

Organic Waste Recycling

Food and organic waste make up 30% of our waste stream. If not handled carefully, these materials can add billions of tons of greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere. DADS is implementing an organic waste recovery and recycling facility to utilize organic waste better and help combat greenhouse gas emissions.

Gas to Energy

DADS landfill gas-to-energy facility produces enough energy to power more than 2,500 Colorado homes annually. Reusing this valuable resource, reduces our reliance on fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, and prevents raw methane in the gas from escaping into the atmosphere as a greenhouse gas.

Cleaner Gas; Quieter Service

In 2019, we opened two compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling stations — one in Colorado Springs and one Ault. Our growing fleet of 303 CNG trucks offers cleaner collection days by saving 2.4 million gallons of diesel fuel and cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 15 percent. Also, CNG engines run much quieter making collection day a more tranquil one for you and your neighbors.

Keeping Colorado Green

Last year WM of Colorado customers recycled more than 197,000 tons of bottles, cans, paper and cardboard in Colorado. Recycling these materials saved:

  • 1.3 million mature trees
  • 774 million gallons of water
  • 481 million kWh of electricity
