Recycling at Home
- Determine materials to recycle.
Perform a waste audit (inventory the kinds of materials in your garbage). Commonly recycled items include paper, newspaper, cardboard, metal cans, plastic containers and glass bottles.
- Make recycling convenient
Ensure that recycling is as convenient as throwing materials away throughout your house. Place recycling bins next to garbage cans in the kitchen, home office, garage and anywhere else recyclable materials are generated. Use a collection method that’s convenient for you. Paper bags or cardboard boxes work well, but make sure you place recyclables loose in the cart at your curb.
- Get everyone in your household involved
Educate all household members about what can and can't be recycled and that everyone is participating. Post recycling guidelines on your fridge or in an area where they can be easily referenced.
- Clean containers
Don't let a messy peanut butter or jam jar find its way into the garbage. Soak hard-to-clean containers to make rinsing easier.
- Set Goals
Once you’ve identified items that are commonly found in the garbage, set goals to recycle these items or make different purchasing decisions. By purchasing materials that are durable and have minimal packaging, you can reduce the waste your household generates.
Making environmentally smart decisions begins with having the resources to make you an informed consumer.
