Facility details

We opened the Spokane Materials and Recycling Technology Center (SMaRT), an $18 million single-stream recycling facility on an 8-acre site right outside the City of Spokane in October 2012. The facility is the first of its kind in Washington State east of the Cascade Mountains and processes 100,000 tons of recyclables per year.

The facility is the centerpiece of Waste Management's regional strategy aimed at dramatically reducing waste and boosting recycling in the region. It is of more than 100 single-stream facilities that Waste Management operates nationwide.

The SMaRT Center, curbside recycling conversion, and CNG fleet launch are all part of Waste Management Spokane's commitment to help build sustainable communities across Eastern Washington.

Single-stream recycling

The 62,000-square-foot, single-stream facility allows residents and businesses to recycle a broad assortment of materials in one recycling container. The facility allows the Spokane area to achieve a 40 percent recycling rate, which exceeds the national average.

What the recycling and technology center does:

  • Processes 11 pounds of recyclables per second, 26 tons of mixed recyclables per hour, 250 tons of recyclables per 10-hour shift, and an estimated 100,000 tons of recyclables per year
  • Features high-tech equipment, including an optical sorter and a glass crusher with a hurricane vacuum system
  • Enables residents to recycle more by using one large roll cart and include many materials that were previously not accepted

Tours

Tours of the recycling center are available to customers and community groups on a limited basis. Please contact us today to inquire about a tour of the facility (details in the contact box, above right).
