About Waste Management

Waste Management, Inc. is its industry's leading provider of comprehensive waste management services. Headquartered in Houston, Texas, we protect the quality of life in many communities, providing waste solutions to approximately 25 million residential and two million commercial customers in North America.

THE CWM - EMELLE ALABAMA FACILITY is located in West Alabama, about five miles north of the town of Emelle in Sumter County. This 2800-acre facility is located atop a geologic phenomenon known as the Selma Chalk Formation, a massive, stable, homogenous and essentially impermeable formation. Approximately 700 feet of Selma Chalk with a permeability of 1x10-7 cm/sec isolates the facility from the nearest groundwater-producing aquifer. The thickness and extremely low permeability of this geological formation provide a natural environmental protection that exceeds regulatory requirements. The disposal cells are constructed with double synthetic liners and leachate collection systems for removal of rain water. Design and construction of the disposal cells ensure that the environment is protected. CWM Emelle has a RCRA Part B permit from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management with authority from EPA Region IV. TSCA disposal approval is issued by EPA Region IV.

 In addition the facility offers:

  1. TSCA landfill (PCB), including PCB landfill and PCB equipment servicing.
  2. RCRA landfill, including treatment, solidification, decharacterization, and stabilizaiton.
  3. Debris management, including macroencapsulation and microencapsulation.
  4. Storage and transshipment of waste for recycling, fuels blending, and incineration.
