Information For Our Customers Regarding IKE

September 22, 2008 –11:00 am

Starting today, Waste Management will begin servicing our residential and commercial routes in the Houston and Beaumont areas, according to the regular weekly collection schedule. In addition, Waste Management will continue expanded hours of collection to help manage the anticipated heavy volume of garbage at the curb.

All Waste Management residential and commercial customers received garbage collection by 4 pm Sunday afternoon except those customers that had obstructions blocking containers or had other hazards, such as downed power lines or impassable streets.

Waste Management is collecting only household garbage, such as food refuse, diapers, newspapers and other waste produced during the week, according to the agreements with the cities and municipalities we serve. Waste Management is not collecting storm debris or green/yard waste, which includes carpet, rugs, furniture, sheet rock, wood fencing, tree limbs, bags of clothing, refrigerators, household appliances and roofing materials. Counties, cities and municipalities are coordinating the collection of storm debris independently from Waste Management with other contractors. Customers should separate their household garbage from storm debris by bagging their household garbage and place it at the curb. Storm debris should be placed in a separate pile or piles.

Residents and businesses should follow these steps to assist in the speedy collection of their garbage:

  • Do not lean trash or other objects against a garbage can, dumpster or roll-off container.
  • Be patient. Collecting this large amount of garbage takes additional time than normal. If drivers do not reach a customer’s street on the designated collection day, they will complete those routes the following day.
