Recycle Often, Recycle Right: Community outreach to WM’s littlest customers in Baldwin Park
BALDWIN PARK, Calif. Kindergarten students in Baldwin Park, Calif., got a treat recently when Residential Driver Leonard Leanos and Curby the Recycling Robot visited two elementary schools in the city. Curby is operated by Maintenance Manager Sean Van Niman.
District Manager Cheryl Lautman and Public Sector Solutions Representative Teri Muse talked to more than 275 kindergarteners about what items can be placed in the recycling cart. The visit was all part of WM’s San Gabriel Valley hauling district’s recycling education program. Other activities through-out the year include recycling information booths at:
- Environmental awareness fairs
- Concerts in the park
- Pride of the Valley 5k Run
- Baldwin Park High School’s Earth Day Event
- Clean Cart Challenge
Van Niman operates Curby’s speech and movements by remote control. A receptacle in Curby’s belly allows the students to feed recyclable items to him. When they do, each child receives a WM-branded coloring book on recycling.
