The Waste Management Materials Recovery Facility in West Jordan recently installed new state of the art machinery that allows the facility to capture more recyclable materials in less time. The new machinery represents the latest technology in recycling. The new cardboard screen separates all large cardboard for bailing and processing. The new optical sorting unit has been added to the current system to identify contaminants in newspaper. The unit then separates these non-newspaper items with a burst of air. The residual, or contaminants after sorting, is less than 10%.

The Waste Management Materials Recovery Facility recycles 37,028 tons of mixed recyclables a year. This is a greenhouse gas reduction of 113,058 metric tons of carbon dioxide. This greenhouse gas reduction is equivalent to taking 207,078 passenger vehicles off the roadways for one year or enough electricity to power 114,975 homes for one year.

Tours are available by appointment at The Waste Management Materials Recovery Facility for groups over the age of 18. Call (801)282-8216.
