Information on proposed Monarch Hill expansion

Monarch Hill Renewable Energy Park is a 500-acre site in unincorporated Broward County bordered by the Florida Turnpike and Sample, Powerline and Wiles roads. It includes Monarch Hill Landfill and its landfill-gas-to-energy plant.

Since opening in 1965, Monarch Hill Landfill has served the regional disposal needs of residential, municipal, and commercial customers in Broward County and surrounding South Florida communities.

Monarch Hill Landfill takes in approximately 5,000 tons per day of mostly post-recycled Construction & Demolition debris (C&D) and bulk waste comprising about 90% of inbound volume. Today, only about 10% of the inbound material is household garbage or municipal solid waste (MSW).

The site has also been a vital South Florida resource following hurricane events. In 2017, Monarch Hill received 12,000 tons per day of storm debris after Hurricane Irma. And in 2005 following Hurricane Wilma, the landfill took in approximately one million tons of hurricane debris allowing the region to recover more quickly from both major storm events.
