Stony Hollow Landfill is engineered with environmental protection systems that meet or exceed rigorous state and federal government regulations and are subject to highly regulated monitoring and reporting requirements.
Systems include engineered liners and cover, leachate (wastewater) collection, onsite pre-treatment, and removal for offsite final treatment and/or disposal. Landfill gas is collected and controlled via an active gas removal system and collected landfill gas is reintroduced to gas consumers in Ohio.
Hazardous materials are not accepted at the landfill.

Since 2016, Stony Hollow Landfill has taken significant action to address elevated temperatures in a portion of the landfill.
Elevated temperatures are a unique phenomenon at landfills that requires extra attention and engineering to address.
The elevated temperatures are caused by a change in the way the trash is naturally decomposing.
Higher temperatures as waste decomposes can create more liquid and gas than normal, which can cause odors if not managed.

Site Accomplishments

Improved Gas Collection

As of 2015, more than 150 landfill gas collection wells have been added or upgraded to collect and manage landfill gas. Most of the gas collected is converted into renewable energy, which powers homes and businesses in the region. Excess gas is flared onsite for final elimination.

Improved Wastewater Collection

To manage increased leachate from elevated temperatures, the landfill’s wastewater collection system was upgraded with multiple conveyance systems, added storage, and onsite pre-treatment. Final treatment is completed off-site by a local wastewater facility or third party.

Secondary Gas Flare

A second landfill gas flare was installed to accommodate additional gas capacity and to serve as a backup to the existing flare. The secondary flare provides a total redundant system.

Odor Control Barrier & Alerts

A 22.3-acre temporary synthetic odor control barrier was installed to control migrating landfill gas, using a vacuum system to collect uncontained gas and direct it to flares. The cap will remain until the Ohio EPA confirms site stability through testing. As of May 2024, Ohio EPA has approved new waste placement over 3.5 acres of the original barrier. A communication protocol is in place to notify the Ohio EPA, RAPCA, the local health department, and local elected officials of the potential for the migration of odors.

New Storage Tanks

Two large wastewater storage tanks with odor controls were built, where the collected leachate is stored before being pre-treated onsite or sent offsite for final treatment. The onsite pre-treatment system involves a biological activated air treatment (BAAT) system.

Backup Generators

Backup generators were installed to provide emergency power to landfill systems in the event of a major power outage in the area.

Going Forward

Stony Hollow Landfill will continue working with the Ohio EPA and local agencies to monitor all phases of operations. We plan to request approval for additional waste placement over the temporary cap while closely monitoring activity. We’re confident these steps will help address odor issues and remain committed to working with the community and regulators until they are resolved.

Landfill Benefits & Features

Containment Design

Stony Hollow Landfill is constructed following the requirements of the best available technology, including a base liner system consisting of recompacted clay, synthetic liner material(s), and drainage layer material. Similarly, the final cap system design includes a synthetic liner, drainage material, and soils suitable for vegetation growth.

Leachate Collection & Treatment

Stony Hollow Landfill design includes base liner drainage materials, liquid removal pumps, conveyance piping, and storage tanks to ensure proper management and removal of wastewater (leachate) from the active landfill. Collected leachate is pre-treated onsite and transferred offsite for final treatment and disposal.

Groundwater Monitoring

Site groundwater is monitored semi-annually in accordance with state regulations. Both upgradient and downgradient groundwater wells exist around the perimeter of the landfill.

Landfill Gas Management – Energy is Renewable

Landfill gas is controlled through the installation of a gas collection system within the landfill. This system consists of a series of vertical extraction wells and horizontal collectors installed within the landfill, which are connected by a series of pipelines. The system is connected to a mechanical device, such as a blower or compressor, which creates a vacuum that pulls landfill gas toward the wells where it is then sent to a control device, such as a flare, where the landfill gas is destroyed.

At Stony Hollow Landfill, landfill gas is sent both to a flare and to a nearby gas-to-energy facility that converts the gas into renewable energy. Excess gas is safely eliminated by flare and monitored to ensure the process meets all required air regulations.

Stony Hollow has added more than 150 landfill gas collection wells and made improvements to the existing gas collection system, which sends the gas to one of two onsite flares to be eliminated, or to a beneficial reuse facility.

Erick is a key and valued member of the WM Great Lakes Area (MI/OH/IN) community, who works every day to support the team at Stony Hollow Landfill, in addition to other WM landfills across Northeast Ohio. Erick’s WM journey started on the back truck following his high school graduation. Since then, Erick has built a meaningful career at WM, making impactful changes every step of the way.
