Grand Central Landfill

The Grand Central Landfill is a municipal solid waste landfill in Plainfield Township, Pennsylvania between Lehigh Valley and the Pocono Mountains. Grand Central has provided environmentally responsible waste management for communities, businesses and industries since the 1980's.

Our landfill employs the latest advances in landfill technology and is engineered with environmental protection systems that meet or exceed government monitoring and reporting requirements. These systems include engineered liners and capping, leachate collection and treatment systems and a gas collection system.

Our team is dedicated to wildlife habitat preservation and provides over 200 acres of grassland habitat for a variety of wildlife, including birds on the Audubon Society's decline list. The team has maintained the landfill's Wildlife Habitat Council Certification since 2007.

With two miles of hiking trails, the Grand Central Education Center offers a scenic view of many ecosystems. The current habitats consist of woodlands, grasslands and old field and shrubs. Community members have identified several migrant and endangered bird species as well as several rare butterflies.

To protect this natural habitat, the following activities are prohibited:

• Drinking alcoholic beverages
• Driving motorized vehicles
• Hunting
• Walking unleashed pets
• Littering

The activites below are encouraged:

• Hiking and jogging
• Nature walks
• School field trips
• Bird watching
• Cross country skiing
• Picnicking

The Grand Central Landfill has a team of dedicated volunteers involved in conservation at the Education Center. Examples include:

• Federal Bird Banding of American Tree Swallows, Eastern Bluebirds and American Kestrels
• Data collection and survey of avian breeding and migration
• Survey of butterfly populations, food, and nectar plants
• Development of a pollinator garden
• Various Scout projects that include educational learning opportunities for the general public
