In coordination with the NYSDEC and the Towns of Perinton and Macedon, continuous third-party air monitoring around the landfill perimeter is being performed to address concerns from residents and the Fairport School District. The air monitoring program, conducted by GHD Environmental consulting, was initiated on March 6, 2018. GHD has provided weekly summary reports and results of the air sampling to the Towns and NYSDEC prepared by GHD.
To date, two independent firms have analyzed the data provided by GHD and have concluded that the facility does not have an impact on public health. CPF Associates, Inc., a Maryland-based scientific research and consulting firm with in-depth experience in environmental and public health assessment methods reviewed the air sampling results from a public health perspective. CPF concluded that based on their review of the air monitoring, there is no evidence of a health threat based on the evaluated air measurements collected in the vicinity of the landfill.
This evaluation performed by an industry expert reinforces the conclusions drawn by MEH Consulting. In an independent report prepared for the Town of Perinton on May 8, 2018, MEH Consulting concluded that the current air sampling data shows that there is not a level of concern in the vicinity of High Acres Landfill nor the Lyndon Road Baseball Fields.
Air Quality Sampling & Collection
The CPF evaluation examined Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) ambient air concentrations measured every 10 minutes from March 6 through April 24, 2018 at locations around the landfill as well as the Northside Dudley Elementary School. Of the 35,401 air samples analyzed during this period, only 12 had detectable levels of H2S. All of the H2S concentrations reported over the seven-week period were below available health-protective air concentrations, indicating that adverse health effects are not expected even at sampling locations near the landfill boundary.
All the concentrations were also below New York’s ambient air quality standard for H2S.
