This change will not affect residents of Fairport and it does not affect taxes.
This change provides residents with freedom of choice regarding service options, recycling toters, pickup frequency and overall cost.
What's Changing?
Starting on July 1, 2022 whoever you have contracted with for your residential waste service will not collect both your trash and recycling.
If you currently have WM as your service provider, nothing will change.
If you have contracted with someone other than WM as your service provider, your service provider will now pick up your recyclables instead of WM.
Residential curbside recycling collection by WM use to be unique to the Town of Perinton. This service was required by the town as part of the High Acres Host Community Agreement. NYS laws now require all residential refuse haulers to provide curbside recycling collection as part of their service.
In lieu of WM collecting all residential curbside recycling, WM will pay the town $300,000 annually to support community-wide environmental green initiatives and programs that benefit all residents. These initiatives may include organics recycling, electronic waste recycling, EV charging stations, and more.
Why Is It Changing?
Since 1991, NYS, County, and local laws have been adopted that now require all residential waste haulers to collect recyclables. Therefore, what was once unique to the Town of Perinton is now required by law in all NY communities.
As part of the latest High Acres Landfill Host Community Agreement, recycling collection was updated and is now consistent with current laws. This allows residents freedom of choice to decide which services best meet their needs. Examples may include, selecting a hauler based on service options, recycling toters, frequency of pick-ups, and overall cost.
When Is It Changing?
Starting on July 1, 2022, whoever you have contracted with for your residential refuse service will now collect both your refuse and recycling.
Do I Need To Do Anything?
If you are currently a WM customer, no action is required on your part. If you have contracted with someone other than WM as your residential refuse service provider, you are encouraged to call your service provider and confirm that they will begin collecting your recyclables starting July 1, 2022, as required by law.
If your hauler increases your rates, know that you as the consumer can call other haulers to compare rates offered in your community (see list of local haulers)
If you do not contract with a hauling company to service your home refuse and recycling needs, you can use the Residential Drop-off Facility at High Acres Landfill and drop off your recyclables free of charge.
