One of best ways for everyone to do their part to protect wildlife, keep our rivers clean, and help make our community more sustainable is by learning how to Recycle Right® at home, at work, and at school!

As part of our celebration of America Recycles Day on November 15, 2024, WM Middle Tennessee has unveiled “Shelly,” its new sustainability ambassador.
This past Earth Day, students from a Franklin, TN High School, collected 100 lbs of trash from the Harpeth River with support from the Harpeth River Conservancy. One passionate student then used some of this trash to create “Shelly,” a turtle sculpture, highlighting the impact of pollution on our rivers.
To do our part to protect local species, we have set aside approximately thirty acres at our local facility as freshwater wetlands. The area was recently recognized as a ‘Certified Wildlife Habitat’ by the Wildlife Habitat Council.
Shelly now lives at WM’s River Hills Materials Recovery Facility, where we host tours showing how recycling works in Nashville while educating, inspiring, and empowering the next generation of sustainable thinkers.
In addition to programs hosted at our facilities, WM also partners with Metro Nashville, Tennessee State University and organizations like Nashville Earth Day and Musicians Corner to provide opportunities for students and community members to learn about sustainable practices.
