Year End Review for 2023
Southern Services Landfill

ALT Habitat Service Day
Each year, the Area Leadership team along with several other area leaders participate in a service day working in our Wildlife Habitat Council Silver Certified Habitat.
We work on various projects such as invasive species removal, duck and bird box refurbishing and installation, litter pick up in our wetlands area that washes in from the adjacent Cumberland River.

Book'em Literacy Bowl
We were able to help support the childhood literacy focused non-profit Book’em in the spring with their Literacy Bowl.
We provided volunteers and lunch cooked on none other than our WM Dumpster Diner. The event provided fun and free books to students of all ages.

Bordeaux Beautification Day
Leaders from our operations team and Southern Services Landfill teamed up with the North Nashville Chamber of Commerce and the Music City Community Court for a beautification day. We swept the median and sidewalks on the MLK Bridge in Bordeaux.
In addition to the beautification day, WM also supports The North Nashville Chamber of Commerce and the Beautification Committee by providing landscaping and litter maintenance to the “Welcome to Bordeaux” Triangle.

Earth Day
WM teams up with Centennial Park Conservancy and Nashville Earth Day each year. We not only have on-site activations where we provide educational games and displays, we provide onsite management, education and sorting to make sure the Recycling is clean and is processed correctly.
We also provide tracking and reporting to ensure we make Earth Day as sustainable as possible.

EEOG Speed Networking
Mid-South Area Leaders participated in the Education Equal Opportunity Group Speed Networking / Mock interview event in Franklin, TN.
Leaders met with local high school students to discuss different career pathways within WM and gave tips on making a great first impression to potential employers.

Harpeth Family Fun Day
The Harpeth Conservancy Family Fun Day is one of our favorite events of the year.
This year we celebrated Pollinator Week with handmade seed bombs and our always popular Will it Recycle Corn Hole Toss Game.

VUMC Sustainability Summit
WM was a proud supporter of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center Sustainability Summit where we provided funding for several micro-grants for VUMC faculty and staff to research different ways to improve sustainability within the healthcare industry.
Don Gentilcore, Area Director of Disposal Operations, presented at the Sustainability Healthcare Summit where he talked about WM’s sustainability goals and commitments.

Northwest YMCA Angel Tree Program
Every year we enjoy participating in the Northwest YMCA Angel Tree Christmas Program.
Employees in and around Nashville helped provide Christmas Wishlist Items for over 20 children, and employees volunteered at the distribution day by organizing and helping load gifts into the family’s cars.

WCHS Southern Tour
WM has enjoyed collaborating with Whites Creek High School Alternative Energy pathway and hosted a group of students to tour our Construction and Demolition Landfill and Recycling center and our Wildlife Habitat Council Certified Habitat.

YAB Summer Camp
Youth About Business is an organization whose mission is to expose youth to the business world through their experiential learning model. WM was proud to participate in the YAB Summer Camp where students learned about the issues surrounding solid waste management in the community.
We hosted students at several of our facilities including our River Hills Single-Stream Recycling facility and North Nashville Construction and Demolition Recycling facility.
We also had several members of our leadership team provide industry expertise, insight and feedback to the students for their final project and recommendations.
