Sacramento County

Waste Management provides high quality refuse and recycling collection services to local residents and businesses. We are justifiably proud of taking care of our customers, while working to keep efficient operations and fair rates. We have worked well with our local communities to offer programs that meet and exceed state-mandated recycling requirements, and have been proactive in areas of waste reduction, recycling yard trimmings processing and conversion of diesel vehicles to alternate and less polluting fuels.

Commercial and Multifamily Property Mandatory Organics Service

California and Sacramento County regulations require any business that generates 4 cubic yards or more of solid waste AND recycling per week to recycle the organic portion of their waste. Organics include food scraps, food-soiled paper, landscape trimmings and nonhazardous wood waste.

Multifamily complexes with 5 or more units that generate 4 cubic yards or more of solid waste AND recycling per week are required to recycle only landscape waste.

What is Organics Collection?

Organics is the collection of food scraps, food-soiled paper and landscaping trimmings. In the past, these materials were placed in the trash, new regulations require you to separate organics and place these materials in your new Organics container.

Collection these materials ensures they return as compost to naturally nourish farms and gardens. It also means these organics do not end up in the landfill where they contribute to the creation of greenhouse gas.

Do All Commercial Properties Need Organics Service?

Any commercial property that generates 2 or more cubic yards of trash and/or recycling a week must subscribe to Organics service. Multifamily properties with 5 or more units that generate 4 or more cubic yards a week of trash and recycling must subscribe to Organics service for landscaping waste only. Property owners who self-haul organics materials or multifamily properties that hire a landscaping company that recycles yard trimmings can request a waiver. Please visit the Sacramento Regional Solid Waste Authority for more information on requesting a waiver.
