California Legislation - AB341

With the adoption of AB 341, the state of California now requires commercial enterprises and public entities that generate four or more cubic yards per week of waste, and multi-family housing facilities with five or more units, to adopt recycling practices.

While AB341 will require some new actions on your part, rest assured Waste Management is already working on ways to help you stay in compliance. Soon, we will be initiating an implementation plan that will bring all customers into compliance by the legislative deadline of July 2012.

We will be providing you with additional communications over the next few months as the regulations are finalized. Please take a moment to review the Frequently Asked Questions included in this letter. In the meantime, there is no action required of you.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have limited space for containers. How can I comply?

We are working to provide a number of options to assist with your diverse needs. One of our representatives will contact you soon with more information.

Where can I find information on AB 341?

Read the official bill online: http://leginfo.ca.gov/pub/11-12/bill/asm/ab_0301-0350/ab_341_bill_20111006_chaptered.pdf

What do I need to do?

No action is required by you at this time. The new regulations are not expected to take effect until early 2012. Your Waste Management representative will contact you about your facility’s implementation plan and will arrange for your facility’s recycling service in advance of new regulations.

Will this add costs to my bill?

There may be a small set-up charge when we deliver your container.  You will also receive a bill for recycling services once your container has been delivered. However, these initial recycling costs may be offset by reduced use of solid waste services over time. In addition, current commodity values for recyclable items are high, so you may also experience some reductions in total service costs over time.
