WM was contracted by one of the nation’s largest oil refineries to manage and dispose of their centrifuge solids. There was just one problem; the disposal facility of choice, Chemical Waste Management of the Northwest (CWMNW), was over 2,000 miles away in Arlington, OR.
WM worked with the refinery contractor to develop a cost effective and environmentally sound solution. WM provided intermodal containers, railcars, and support services including way billing, railcar loading, tracking and reporting. After the contaminated materials arrived at Chemical Waste Management of the Northwest, they were treated in the site’s Organic Recovery Unit, which specializes in thermal desorption technology to remove contaminates from soil, sludge, sediment and more.
At the height of project activity, WM transported 20 intermodal roll-offs per day. In total, 165 loads of centrifuge solids were transported for management, treatment and disposal. All of the materials were processed at CWMNW, and recovered hydrocarbons were returned to market for reprocessing and reuse. After successfully completing this phase of work, WM was awarded a second project that generated over 450 loads.
