The Twin Creeks Environmental Centre, formerly the Warwick Landfill, is a regional facility located in Watford, Ontario, that provides safe and convenient disposal services for communities, businesses and industries in the Province of Ontario. The landfill within the Twin Creeks Environmental Centre is approved to receive municipal, industrial, commercial, and institutional solid non-hazardous wastes generated, including non-hazardous contaminated soil. The Centre also houses a recycling and waste public drop-off area, open to Warwick Township residents.
The landfill originally began operation in 1972, and WM of Canada Corporation has owned and operated the landfill since 1996. In 2008, after a nearly 12-year technical study and public consultation period, the landfill was approved for expansion. The approval of the Expansion Landfill increased the total landfill airspace capacity to 26.5 million m³ over an area of 101.8 ha. Construction of the infrastructure for the Expansion Landfill began in August 2008 and the first waste was deposited into the Expansion Landfill in November 2009.
The Twin Creeks Environmental Centre is engineered with environmental protection systems that meet or exceed regulatory requirements and are subject to highly regulated monitoring and reporting requirements. Systems include engineered liners and covers, leachate collection and removal, landfill gas collection and control, and on-site leachate disposal through phytoremediation.
WM is proud to be an active supporter of community events and programs that make the Township of Warwick and surrounding areas a strong and healthy place to live, work, and play. Community benefits include host community fees, local sports club donations, downtown amenities, arena upgrades, a dog park addition, Watford and Warwick fire department donations, and various other charitable contributions and community events.
The renewable bio-gas produced by the landfill is provided to a neighbouring greenhouse to grow produce, which is sold throughout Ontario and Quebec, creating employment opportunities for the local community.
The Twin Creeks Environmental Centre has been certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council since 2004. The site includes native grasslands, a poplar plantation that links existing forested areas, and a mix of upland tree species and diverse understory plants.
