Grand Central Landfill, through its host community agreement, each year creates significant positive economic activity in Plainfield Township.
In 2020, Grand Central Landfill provided the Township with approximately $2 million in tonnage-base payments per the ACT101 Host Fee and Business privilege tax fee. These benefits make living in Plainfield Township more affordable for its residents. Grand Central remains a classroom in the community and although 2020 threw a few curve balls, we offered four on-site programs that allowed interested guests to learn about recycling, waste reduction, and wildlife conservation. We anticipate getting back to our regular programming soon! In the meantime, our new website and Youtube channel offer environmental education videos, history about Grand Central and much more!
Recycling education is extremely important to us and in 2020, we partnered with the Monroe County Waste Authority to host a live discussion around single stream recycling. Conversations like these continue to inform the general public of the proper items to include in the curbside bin. Recycling myths and facts are also available on our website www.wm.com/recycleright
Grand Central is actively involved in many wonderful organizations around the Slate Belt. In 2020, Grand Central provided over $50,000 in charitable and in-kind donations to the Slate Belt community. Contributions to our community extend beyond donations – in fact, our team takes great pride in supporting events and causes throughout the Slate Belt. Team members enjoyed lending a hand at the Slate Belt Rising/Slate Belt YMCA/Wind Gap Fire Company food distribution in 2020 helping distribute 7,290 meals and 1,330 boxes of fresh produce to our community and providing the support needed for the Pen Argyl Area School District & Families First Stuff the Bus event where 80 families benefited.
In 2021, we will continue our support for Slate Belt Rising of $50,000 and look forward to partnering on revitalization and economic development within the Slate Belt.
Waste Management is one of Pennsylvania’s leading contributors to qualifying schools and organizations through the state’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC). Since the program’s inception in 2001, the company has contributed $20 million across the Commonwealth, including $2 million in 2020. The Blue and White Scholastic Foundation, The Wildlands Conservancy, Pocono Environmental Education Center and the Pocono Mountains United Way are among a few of the area recipients of these funds. Locally, Grand Central distributed $18,000 in Pre-K scholarships and nearly $25,000 in EITC scholarships.
The Grand Central Landfill and Hauling team hopes to connect with our neighbors in 2021 and encourages residents to check our website and Facebook page for upcoming events. 2021 looks promising and with partnerships around the area, we look forward to supporting the community in a variety of ways.
