Southern Services has approximately thirty acres set aside as freshwater wetland. The mitigated wetlands have been enhanced to become a Certified Wildlife Habitat. Projects at the habitat include: reclaiming of wood waste from the sorting operations conducted at the landfill. The reclaimed material is used to construct bird boxes for habitat by woodland ducks and blue birds. The wetlands are monitored by the Tennessee Ornithological Society of Nashville due to the variety of birds attracted to the area.
Other enhancements include an invasive species project to control Willows, Bradford Pear Trees and Honeysuckle Bushes within the wetlands. Southern has also worked with local wildlife rehab centers as a place to release ducks, geese and other wildlife once rehabilitated.
