1. Why is Waste Management my only option for residential waste collection?

On August 15th, 2017 Chico City Council Members approved a new franchise agreement designating Waste Management as the service provider for all residential customers in Chico. The plan stabilizes pricing and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by cutting the number of collection trucks in your neighborhood by half. Participation in recycling and green waste programs will also increase the amount of material diverted from local landfills. Under the agreement, City of Chico residents do have the option to self-haul.

2. What do I have to do to set up service with Waste Management if I had service with Recology?

A. Your service will be set up automatically. Waste Management and Recology are working together to ensure a smooth transition. WM services are bill quarterly in advance. Former Recology customers who are utilizing an automatic payment system are encouraged to discontinue payment and establish an account online with Waste Management at WM.com

3. How often will my trash be collected?

Collection of trash, recycling and green waste will happen every week. Please place your carts curbside by 5:00 AM on your collection day. Carts should be place 3 feet apart clear of parked cars and other obstructions that may make them difficult for the trucks to reach.

4. What services are included in my collection service?

Your new residential collection services include:

  • Waste, Recycling & Green Waste Collection included in one rate.
  • Two bulky collections per year, for a total of 3 items.
  • Free cardboard drop off at the transfer station

5. Can I use carts other than the carts provided by Waste Management?

During the transition between providers, you can continue to use your Recology issued carts. Waste Management crews will be replacing non-WM and damaged WM carts over the next few months. Due to liability concerns and compatibility with our trucks Waste Management does not service customer owned carts.

6. Where can I get more information about rates?

Standardizes service rates have been approved by the Chico City Manager’s office, and are available here. They are also available at Chico.Ca.us

7. Can I change my level of trash collection service?

Yes. Trash carts are available in 32-gallon, 64-gallon and 96-gallon sizes. Service includes a 64-gallon Recycling cart and 96-gallon Green Waste. Your rate is based on the size of your trash cart. If you decide you need to change your level of service, please call (530) 893-4777 to speak with one of our customer service agents about options and rates.

8. Can I still drop-off cardboard free of charge?

Chico residents can drop-off cardboard free of charge the Waste Management facility at 2569 Scott Ave in Chico Monday through Friday 8 am to 4 pm.

9. What happens if I can’t fit all my trash in cart?

The franchise agreement requires trash to be in the cart with the lid closed for pickup. This helps reduce litter and discourages scavenging animals. Trash and recycling that do not fit in your container may be subject to additional fees. Each residential customer account is entitled to 2 free curbside bulky pickups per year, for up to 3 large items. Please call (530) 893-4777 at least 48 hours ahead of your desired pickup date to schedule service. Items must be curbside by 5 a.m. Acceptable items include furniture and appliances. Tires, construction debris, medical waste and household hazardous waste are not acceptable. Please indicate items to be picked up when booking appointment.

12. Do I need to rinse out my recyclables prior to placing them in my recycling cart?

All containers should be empty. Food and liquids spoil the recyclability of paper and cardboard. If necessary, rinse out containers to eliminate food and any risk of wildlife scavenging.

13. What will happen if I use my recycling and green waste carts as a trash cart?
