Residential Services

Waste Management offers a wide variety of convenient curbside residential services.

Waste Management is pleased to provide waste and recycling services to Rolling Hills Estates residents. This page will outline your basic residential service guidelines, and the other pages in this section will go over the cart system and some of our other collection services.


Service Guidelines

All residences (excluding some town homes and condos that do not receive greenwaste collection) are provided with the following curbside collection services on Wednesdays:

  • Recycling (BLUE Cart)
  • Greenwaste Recycling (GREEN Cart)
  • Trash - Non-recyclable trash (GREY Cart)

Place all carts at curbside by 7:00 am on Wednesdays for collection. Lids should be closed, and the lid opening should face towards the street. Carts should be placed side by side at least 3 feet apart and 3 feet away from parked cars or objects. As a courtesy to your neighbor, promptly remove carts after service.

Please do not leave additional refuse alongside your carts. Waste Management will be happy to replace your carts with larger sizes or provide you with extra carts. Additional or larger recycling and greenwaste carts are available at no cost. Additional or larger grey trash carts are available for a monthly fee. Additional carts can be ordered by contacting Customer Service at (310) 677-6500.

3% Annual Prepayment Discount

You can save 3% on your monthly rate by prepaying for the year. Discounted payment amounts are as follows:

Additional Large Item Collection

Additional large item pick-ups can be arranged for $28.70 per cubic yard (2015-2016).

Holiday Tree Collection

Waste Management will collect and recycle unflocked trees curbside for the first two weeks following Christmas on your regular collection day. Trees taller than six (6) feet must be cut in half. Please remove all decorations including tinsel, lights, ornaments and tree stands before placing at the curb on your service day.

Excess Cart Exchange or Additional Cart Requests

Additional carts may be requested or exchanged for $14.83 each occurance (2015-2016).

On-Premise Collection Rate (Subscription)

A subscription to on-premise collection can be arranged for an additional $14.83 (2015-2016).

Maximum Weight Limits

  • 96 gallon carts: 250 lbs.
  • 64 gallon carts: 220 lbs.
  • 45 gallon carts: 165 lbs
  • 32 gallon carts: 110 lbs

To avoid having an overweight cart, or causing possible damage to the cart or truck, do not place rocks, concrete, bricks, manure or dirt in carts. Please do not overfill or tightly pack waste into the cart. All trash inside must fall out when the cart is emptied.

If the cart is overweight, the driver will attempt service and notify the resident by leaving an Important Notice tag attached to the cart. However, if we are unable to empty the cart, the cart will be tagged and marked as “overweight.” It will then be the responsibility of the resident to lighten the contents for the following week’s service.

Resident Responsibility for Cart

Each resident is responsible for the cleansing and security of the trash, recycling and greenwaste carts. If carts are damaged or destroyed, please contact Customer Service at (310) 677-6500 to place an order for replacement.

Prohibited Waste

Do not place the following materials in your carts:

  • Hazardous Waste (any product labeled toxic, poison, corrosive, flammable, or irritant)
  • Paint
  • Oil
  • Automotive Batteries
  • Tires
  • Hot Ashes
  • Electronic Waste (electronic equipment such as computers, TV’s, computer monitors, cell phones, microwave ovens)
  • Infectious Waste (including used needles)
  • Dead Animals (weighing more than 10 lbs.)
  • Animal Manure (horse manure must go in horse manure carts or bins)

If these materials are found in the cart, it will be tagged with a warning notice and potentially not serviced. Residents can call At Your Door Special Collection for the free, safe & convenient disposal of special waste. Details can be found here.

Prepayment Discounts

Residents who pre-pay for one year of trash and recycling service receive a pre-payment discount. For more information, please contact Customer Service.
