At WM, we’re proud to operate the West Carleton Environmental Centre – an integrated, multi-purpose waste management facility serving the City of Ottawa and nearby communities. Designed with sustainability at its core, the site is focused on protecting the environment while delivering essential waste services to the region.
The facility is equipped with advanced environmental protection systems that meet or exceed regulatory requirements. These systems include engineered liners and covers, leachate collection and treatment, landfill gas capture and control, and on-site leachate management using innovative phytoremediation techniques.
Beyond safe and responsible disposal, the West Carleton Environmental Centre is committed to maximizing waste diversion. Materials like cardboard, metals, concrete, brick, and contaminated soils are recovered for recycling and reuse, including in road-based construction and other beneficial applications.
The site also features land dedicated to local wildlife habitat and hosts a state-of-the-art environmentally engineered landfill designed to safely handle residual waste, which generates renewable energy at WM’s on-site gas-to-energy plant.
WM is proud to serve the City of Ottawa, nearby neighbourhoods, and surrounding communities with a strong commitment to environmental responsibility and community engagement. Our approach goes beyond regulatory compliance — we strive to be a trusted environmental steward and an active, contributing partner in the communities we serve.
