Residential Trash & Recycling Pickup FAQs

Wheel your carts or trash containers to the street and place them curbside by 6 a.m. on your collection day. Do not overload carts; the lids must close completely. Overage fees may apply to overfilled carts. Make sure that all trash and debris is in the cart. Garbage or waste left beside carts may not be collected.

The following hazardous household waste items should NOT be treated as everyday trash and should NOT be disposed of curbside, in your totes, bins or carts:

  • Batteries

  • Electronics

  • Fluorescent light bulbs

  • Paint and paint cans

  • Used motor oil and filters

  • Prescription medications

WM has drop-off locations across the United States and in Canada. Visit one of these locations to properly dispose of your aforementioned household hazardous waste.

While acceptable materials vary by location, the items below are usually allowed in curbside toters, bins, cans or containers for standard trash collection:

  • Diapers

  • Disposable razors

  • Cactus and palm branches

  • Cat litter and pet feces

  • Glassware and ceramic dishes/cups

  • Hoses and wire

  • Juice boxes/pouches

  • Non-fluorescent light bulbs

  • Sheet glass (windows, mirrors, etc.)

  • Foam cups or packing materials

  • Treated wood (painted, stained, etc.)

Generally, the items below can be placed in your curbside recycling containers, bins or totes. These items should be clean and loose — remove from any additional packaging and do not bag them.

For more information on recyclable and non-recyclable materials, check out our Recycling 101 page.

  • All plastics #1-7 (except foam cups or packing materials)

  • Aluminum foil products (cans, baking tins and foil)

  • Paper bags

  • Cardboard

  • Clean paper

  • Glass containers

  • Scrap metal (cookie sheets, utensils)

Non-recyclable materials should be placed in your standard trash receptacles. Be certain that your trash cans, containers, bins or carts are not overloaded and that their lids can close all the way. Additional fees may apply for overfilled containers.

Typically, items below cannot be recycled via curbside recycling programs. For more information on recyclable and non-recyclable materials, check out our Recycling 101 page.

  • Plastic bags (these can often be returned to a local grocery store)

  • Ceramic dishes, cups and glassware

  • Juice boxes/juice pouches

  • Foam cups or packing materials

  • Windows, mirrors, sheet glass

WM provides drop-off locations across the United States and in Canada. Visit one of these locations to dispose of extra-large or bulky non-recyclable items in a proper and responsible manner. Bulky items are those that are too big or heavy for your regular trash container or bin.

  • Cactus or palm branches

  • Glass, metal and aluminum

  • Plastic (bags, flowerpots, etc.)

  • Rocks, dirt, concrete

  • Treated or coated wood (painted, stained, oiled)

Organic waste can often be composted, which benefits the soil where composting occurs as well as the environment at large. For more information, visit the Environmental Protection Agency’s section on how to compost at home.

Bulk and large-item pickups are available to certain WM customers. Terms, fees and conditions may apply. Eligible customers can easily log in to their My WM account to view acceptable items in their area or to schedule a bulk trash pickup. For more information on how to submit a bulk request, please visit our support article.

Examples of bulk items include:

  • Appliances

  • Household furniture (sofas, bed frames, etc.)

  • Mattresses and box springs

  • Cabinets

Visit the nearest WM drop-off location to properly dispose of extra-large or bulky items that are too big or heavy for your regular trash container or bin.

Some items are too hazardous for recycling or disposal in a landfill. Search for a drop-off location that accepts these items and plan for drop-off. Fees, terms and conditions may apply.

  • Paint, stain, varnish, thinner and adhesives

  • Automotive products such as old fuel, anti-freeze, brake fluid, motor oil and oil filters

  • Household cleaners with ammonia or bleach

  • Aerosol cans

  • Fluorescent light bulbs and lamps

  • Computer equipment

  • Dead animals

  • Garden products including pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers

  • Propane tanks and fire extinguishers

  • Pool or photographic chemicals

  • Thermostats, thermometers and other items containing mercury

  • Expired prescriptions and non-prescription medications (no controlled substances)

  • Sharps (syringes, needles, etc.)*

  • Ammunitions, firearms**

*WM has a mail-back service for sharps disposal.

**WM does not accept these items. Contact your local police or sheriff’s office for disposal instructions.

Household baking soda can work wonders at removing trash container smells. Add ¼ cup baking soda to your trash receptacle at the beginning of each week. The best time to add the baking soda is when the containers are dry and clean. Clean cat litter can also be substituted for baking soda. You can clean your trash container with regular soap and water.

We’re here to make sure your container stays in the best possible shape. To request a container repair, log in to your My WM account, select Container Issue and submit your request.

Note: Charges may apply depending on the service.

*Restrictions apply. Not valid for existing customers, HOAs, customers in contract rate or franchise areas, Bagster® and other WM services. See Details
