#33 – Iowa State Fair looks to break its own record

Des Moines, Iowa – In 2013, for the third straight year, Waste Management set a new recycling record at the Iowa State Fair, putting nearly 35 tons of waste to reuse. Last week, the fair worked with the company to surpass its 2013 goal even further and used more than 300 recycling containers placed around the grounds to get there.

In addition, WM worked with vendors to encourage recycling, and even executed an educational program for the estimated 1,200 campers, which last year led to more than 8.6 tons of recycling alone.

“The Iowa State Fair is proud to demonstrate what is possible when we focus on the importance of being green citizens and lead by example,” said Iowa State Fair CEO and Manager Gary Slater. “By educating attendees and providing convenient recycling opportunities, we are able to set new records year after year.”

The Iowa State Fair is an 11-day event that hosts more than one million attendees. Over the last few years, the event has almost doubled its recycling rate, in large part due to WM’s expertise and guidance.
