Sharps waste is a subcategory of biohazardous waste that includes contaminated items capable of puncturing or cutting skin. Because sharps present a risk of needlestick injuries and potential exposure to infectious materials, they must be collected and managed separately using approved sharps disposal containers. For more information, review Sharps 101: Understanding Sharps Waste and Proper Needle Disposal.

Sharps waste should be placed in an FDA-approved sharps container and managed through a compliant sharps disposal program. Disposal requirements vary by location and facility type, but proper handling helps reduce injury risks and support regulatory compliance.

WM believes wholeheartedly that everything can have a next best use. After you’ve unpacked all of you moving boxes, consider giving them to family, friends or coworkers who may also be moving soon. Another option is to giveaway or sell the boxes in online platforms such as Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, neighborhood groups, etc.

For boxes that aren’t in good enough condition for someone else to reuse, we suggest recycling them. When recycling cardboard boxes, remove all other packaging materials such as bubble wrap or styrofoam packing peanuts, break down or flatten the boxes and bundle them together to maximize space. Packaging tape and labels can be left on the box as they will be removed during processing. Boxes that are too dirty or wet may not be recyclable – but they may be suitable for green waste disposal.
