Waste Management is your partner in helping to achieve Castro Valley Sanitary District’s goal of 75% solid waste diversion by the year 2010.

By practicing the 4Rs, you can significantly reduce the amount of waste generated in the first place. Here are a few tips to help you practice the 4Rs – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot:

Reduce: Buy in bulk to avoid individual packages or products with excessive packaging.

Reuse: Avoid the use of disposable or single-use utensils, napkins, paper towels, and other disposable products. Buy durable items that can be reused over and over again.

Recycle: Close the loop on recycling and buy products that are made with recycled materials. Items identified as containing “post-consumer” materials are made from things you tossed in your recycling cart!

Rot: Collect food scraps for composting -- it’s simple. Just put your scraps in empty milk and ice cream cartons. When the cartons are full add them to your green organics cart.
